Improving safety and the outcomes for women and babies is the highest priority for all those involved in maternity services. That’s the message Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), will give to the Baby Lifeline national maternity safety conference in Birmingham today.
Gill will address delegates alongside Lesley Regan, immediate past- President of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), and Jacque Dunkley-Bent, England’s first Chief Midwifery Officer.
Commenting ahead of the conference, Gill Walton said: “Working collaboratively with colleagues across maternity services is key to meeting the Government’s ambition of cutting the rates of neonatal, maternal deaths and stillbirths by 2025. The RCM is committed to building on successful collaborative programmes such as Each Baby Counts and the Tommy’s maternity alliance with the RCOG in order to improve safety and reduce the UK stillbirth rate.
“Maternity safety can and will improve if teams work together, learn together and foster a positive, open and transparent culture where continuing professional development is encouraged. Also, constantly striving to deliver woman centred evidence-based care is key to safety.”
