Royal visit for Rotherham maternity Unit
Rotherham’s maternity unit was treated to a visit by the Patron of The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) yesterday. Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. Accompanying Her Royal Highness on the visit were the RCM Chief Executive Gill Walton and RCM President Kathryn Gutteridge.
The Princess Royal’s visit came at the start of International Year of the Midwife. It follows a letter of thanks to midwives from Her Royal Highness at the start of the year.
Gill Walton, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives, said: “It is wonderful for the unit be visited by The Princess Royal, especially during International Year of the Midwife. They were able to showcase the wonderful work of the midwives, maternity support workers and the wider maternity team. This is a service investing in its staff and its services. It is supporting them to offer even better care and facilities for mothers, babies and their families.”
The Princess Royal toured the unit including stops at the Antenatal Day Unit and Delivery Suite and was updated on future plans including a new bereavement suite. Her Royal Highness also spoke with parents, midwives, maternity support workers and student midwives along with other maternity staff.
June Lovett, Associate Chief Nurse and Head of Midwifery at Rotherham NHS Foundation Trust said: “Her Royal Highness was just really interested in our services and in our maternity care and in our development and in the involvement of our patients.
“She was very engaging and appreciative of the work that goes on here and we were all absolutely delighted to welcome her.”
The unit is also in the running for two RCM awards with the winners to be announced on 5 May. It has been shortlisted in the RCM’s Annual Awards for the Midwifery Service of the Year. Midwife Emma Carver is also shortlisted for the RCM’s Midwives’ Midwife of the Year.
