Maternity services urged to complete Digital Maturity Assessment

An assessment to help maternity services measure their digital maturity has been launched.

Maternity services across England have until the end of June to complete the online assessment that will measure how digital tools and services are used to improve patient care and safety for women and babies.

The Maternity Digital Maturity Assessment is designed for clinicians working in maternity services to ensure that the technological challenges they face on the frontline are evidenced.

Each organisation has a lead responsible for completing the online self-assessment.

The results will be analysed by NHS Digital and each local maternity system will be given a toolkit of resources to help them. This will include key topics highlighted in the local reports, and will provide guidance and recommendations on how to improve their digital maturity. 

NHS Digital will also provide a snapshot of maternity services’ digital maturity across the country and highlight some key areas of best practice that other maternity departments can learn from. 

Midwife and clinical advisor at NHS Digital Julia Gudgeon said: ‘The Maternity Digital Maturity Assessment is a really important piece of work in building a picture of where maternity departments are at in terms of their digital maturity and how learning from other sites can transform digital uptake across the wider service. Digital technology can enable maternity services to work differently and in ways that increase safety for the mothers and babies we care for.

'Maternity services should make sure that they take the time to complete the self-assessment before the end of June so they can benefit from tailor-made analysis of how they can improve their digital maturity.'
