News and updates from RCM Wales by director Helen Rogers (Midwives Autumn 2017).

ICM 2017 lessons: RCM Wales and the Welsh Government collaborated to support nine midwives in attending and presenting at the ICM congress in Toronto. After the event, RCM Wales hosted a feedback evening in July to hear more about the work presented and experiences of those who attended. Chief nursing officer Jean White and the then RCM chief executive Cathy Warwick came to the evening (pictured below).

Speaking out:

The RCM was invited to provide oral evidence to the National Assembly for Wales’ Children, Young People and Education Committee meeting in May on perinatal mental health. I provided evidence along with Sarah Fox, RCM policy advisor and consultant midwife at Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. The published notes from the event can be found at bit.ly/W_perinatal_mental_health

White paper consultation:

The Welsh Government has published for consultation, Services fit for the future, a white paper with proposals relating to quality and governance in health and care in Wales. The consultation will run until 29 September and can be found at bit.ly/fit_for_future. It provides a rare opportunity to influence potential future legislation and the RCM would like to encourage responses from midwives. The RCM will be responding to this consultation.

New RCM Board:

Our congratulations to Kate Evans on her appointment to the RCM Board. Kate is an active workplace rep within Abertawe Bro Morgannwg University Health Board. We are sure that she will bring a great deal of knowledge and skills to the board.

MSW Month:

CM Wales are looking forward to MSW month this November and will be working with and supporting branches to hold events in their health boards. We will also be holding an MSW study day later in the year. Please contact Richard Blakeley at richard.blakeley@rcm.org.uk to register your interest.

NMC highlights:

We were delighted to welcome the NMC for its recent visit to Wales. The visit consisted of an evening update event, three workshops and the council meeting. This not only gave midwives an opportunity to be updated on the work of the NMC, but also provided a platform for Wales to highlight the many excellent initiatives that are currently taking place. The RCM worked with key stakeholders to raise its profile and that of midwifery.
