Leicester midwifery academic receives national midwifery honour

A midwifery academic from Leicester has received a national honour from the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) for her contribution to midwifery education and practice. Jayne Marshall, the Foundation Professor of Midwifery at the University of Leicester has received a prestigious RCM Fellowship. This is an honour given to just a handful of midwives each year.
The Fellowship recognises Jayne’s contributions in many areas but particularly in the fields of midwifery education and pedagogical research.
Jayne has worked tirelessly throughout her career to improve midwifery education to support midwifery care for women and their families. She has been influential in shaping many midwives throughout the world to provide the best possible midwifery care to women and their families.
Jayne initially trained as a nurse at Guys Hospital, London and undertook midwifery training at Kings College Hospital in London. Her first role in education was at the University of Nottingham where she held a variety of teaching and leadership roles before leaving to take up appointment as the Head of the School of Midwifery at Kingston University and St Georges, University of London. Jayne was then promoted to Associate Dean for Practice Education and Workforce Development within the Faculty of Health, Social Care and Education and is now the Faculty’s visiting Professor of Midwifery.
Along with her role as the Foundation Professor of Midwifery at the University of Leicester and the University’s Nursing and Midwifery Council’s (NMC) Lead Midwife for Education, Jayne is also a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an Aurora Role Model and mentor for the Leadership Foundation for Higher Education.
Jayne received the Fellowship yesterday at the Royal College of Midwives Education Conference in London on 12th June.
The RCM Honorary Fellowship is for people who make an outstanding contribution, or give outstanding service, to midwifery, maternity services, services for women and their families or to the RCM.
Jayne said: “I am honoured to have received this national award from the Royal College of Midwives which recognises the contributions that I have made to the midwifery profession through my leadership in education and in preparing future generations of midwives to be safe, competent, compassionate and confident practitioners. By receiving this Fellowship, I can further my role and responsibility as an ambassador for the midwifery profession and be an inspiration to others.”
Professor Philip Baker, Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Head of the College of Life Sciences at the University of Leicester, said: "This award is fitting recognition of Jayne’s many significant achievements in midwifery education. The College is delighted to have recruited someone of Jayne’s calibre to the University of Leicester to establish and lead its Midwifery with Leadership Master’s degree course which will commence this September.”
Kathryn Gutteridge, President of the Royal College of Midwives, said: "The Royal College of Midwives is delighted to award this Fellowship to Jayne. Her achievements are many and her contributions to midwifery education are hugely important, for midwives, women and their families.”

It is open to RCM member midwives who apply and meet the required criteria.
