When: 5 May
Where: In maternity units and through virtual events across the globe
Theme: 100 years of progress

On Thursday 5 May midwives across the world will be celebrating International Day of the Midwife 2022. This time of celebration will reflect on progress in midwifery over the past 100 years. We hope that midwives, maternity support workers and student midwives across the globe celebrate in unison.

Over the past two years, midwives, maternity support workers and student midwives have met extraordinary circumstances and risked their lives to provide excellent care to women and their families. Now is the time to not only celebrate how they’ve been there for our communities throughout the pandemic, but to show up for them in calls to the Government to put money where it counts and invest in maternity.

We will be sharing as much as we can to spread the empowering solidarity of midwives across the nation.

We have created this easy guide for members with some ideas for your IDM celebrations.

Safe Care starts with Self Care

IDM will soon be upon us on 5 May and we were thoughtful of how we all look after each other and ourselves and build habits that sustain us when we are challenged. We often put ourselves last when prioritising what needs doing but we know and evidence shows us that self-care is essential for safe care. We have therefore some thoughts on how we’d like to celebrate not only the day with you but the month of May.

The RCM Scotland team plan to mark the month of May with Safe Care starts with Self Care. We all know that if we look after ourselves first and foremost, we’re in a much better position and mindset to look after others. However, we know that not many of us put ourselves first. To take the first step in looking after ourselves and each other, we are planning a series of short 15-20min sessions on how others have made that first step to self-care. So far we have a session on Mindfulness, Outdoor Bootcamp and Wild Swimming! These sessions will take place throughout the month of May and will be bookable on the RCM website shortly.

Please share with us how you look after yourself, send over a photo for us to share on social media. This can be you sitting with a cuppa, reading a book, taking the dog for a walk, the list is endless.

On the 5 May, we’d like to encourage everyone to take part in some small acts of random kindness and share with us what you’ve done and how it made you feel. Send us photos to share on social media, or post them and tag us in!
