Pressure points

Pressure points

Maternity services are stretched. You probably see examples of it every day. New mothers are sent home too early, they find feeding difficult and aren’t getting enough help. They’re in pain, or unsure of how to care for their babies, and midwives and maternity teams feel frustrated and helpless under the increasing pressure.

These early weeks are crucial for every new family. The support you can give them as a midwife or maternity team has a huge impact on their long-term physical and emotional wellbeing. But there simply aren’t enough midwives or resources to give the time, attention and postnatal care that every family needs and should be entitled to. It needs to be addressed.

The RCM is pushing to protect maternity services – we want better funding and more resources to relieve the pressures you’re feeling, and we want to help mothers understand the care they should be getting. We are producing a series of mini reports looking into different aspects that relate to, or are affected by the shortage of resources while caring for women in the postnatal period.
