Amanda has been in midwifery practice for nearly three decades. More than 12 years ago, she began to challenge the practice of immediate cord clamping after realising that it had no evidence base and it was depriving babies of their full blood volume. Her campaign led to all national and international guidelines changing to recommend delayed cord clamping. Amanda has won several awards for this work, including the British Journal of Midwifery 2015 Midwife of the Year.

She is also a co-inventor of the award-winning LifeStart trolley, which enables vulnerable babies to be ventilated while the umbilical cord is kept intact to ensure the full blood benefit. With Dany Griffiths, Amanda co-founded ‘Say No to Bullying in Midwifery’ – a Facebook group supporting midwives and looking to create change.
