Patricia Gillen

Patricia Gillen

Patricia has been a practicing midwife for 24 years. Her profile includes seven years of experience as a clinical midwife, six as a manager and two as a Supervisor of Midwives and ten years in academia. Patricia is currently working as a midwifery researcher/ lecturer in the University of Ulster and completed her  PhD in 2007, titled: The Nature and Manifestations of Bullying in Midwifery.  Patricia's experience of working in a variety of roles has developed her analytical, decision making and negotiation skills and given her a deep awareness of the need to tackle sensitive issues such as bullying and harassment in midwifery.

Patricia has a reputation for supporting midwives and students both academically and clinically and feels passionately that we must value and nurture our students if we are to secure the long term future of the midwifery profession. Patricia believes that the RCM Board can help tackle the challenges that impact on practice across the UK – setting the strategic direction for maternity care, positioning the RCM as a lead player when determining how maternity services should be delivered, protecting the interests of our members throughout the UK and working with mothers and their families to enhance the public health of future generations.
