‘RCM develops new guide for midwives working with the menopause’

Binary Data

The Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has launched a first of it’s kind publication for midwives and maternity staff  working with the menopause.

The advice forms part of a brand new series of equality and diversity publications that were launched by RCM over the past week.

Working with the menopause’ is just one of five brand new publications now available to RCM members.*

Over a third of RCM members are between the ages of 45 and 55, a stage in a woman’s life where menopause can happen.

The publication includes information on the following:

  • The symptoms of the menopause
  • The age profile of midwives
  • The effects of the menopause on work
  • The effects of the menopause on work in maternity unit
  • What employers can do to help
  • What RCM workplace representatives can do.

Commenting about this publication Amy Leversidge, Employment Relations Advisor at the RCM says; “Over ninety –nine percent of midwives in the UK are women and with over one third of our members possibly experiencing symptoms of menopause this was a really important publication for us to develop specifically for our members.”

“This publication will also be very valuable to RCM workplace representatives as it’s vital that they discuss the issue of menopause in the workplace with heads of midwifery to make sure conditions in the workplace aren’t making symptoms worse.”

“It is well known that when staff are motivated and valued, clinical outcomes are better. The RCM believes that investment in staff is an investment in care. By supporting women and showing understanding of the symptoms involved, we can help keep valued, experienced midwives in the workforce.”
