East and North Hertfordshire RCM Branch Study Day - March 2016

Members of the East and North Hertfordshire RCM branch, organised an exemplary  study day primarily centred around 'Challenges in Midwifery'.

We were honoured to have Cathy Warwick - Chief Executive of the RCM  join us, her opening speech discussed the recent Maternity Review.  It was uplifting to hear her enthusiasm on moving this vision forward, which is based around the continuity of  women centred care.  Coupled with this,  Gillian Smith, RCM Director for Scotland, also attended the day, delivering  a spirited speech on undermining behaviours in the workplace.  We have become aware of the joined up thinking of the RCM and RCOG. We noted the unions have launched a  tool kit on eradicating  bullying on maternity units.

As a trust we are fortunate to have an amazing talented team many who  participated on the day - other talks included The Better Birth Initiative, Pregnancy in Prison, Female Genital Mutilation and Lesbian Parents Accessing NHS services.

It was a privilege to be sitting in a room of like minded midwives, sharing our ultimate love of caring for women and their babies, despite our day to day challenges and pressures working in the NHS.  As a branch we have come away from the study day full of  enthusiasm on ideas to move forward and also an extra 7 ½ hours of participatory CPD!!
