Britain still needs a pay rise rally, 17 October

Fair Pay Overdue Postcard in Orange and Blue Lettering
We need the Government to sit up, listen and act on public sector pay. They have made some positive noises about lifting the pay cap (the cap is the reason the pay of NHS staff has lost value in recent years) but there is no point taking away the cap if the Government still ends up not increasing pay. This is what we fear the Government wants to do – try to get credit for removing the public sector pay cap, but then giving a pay rise that wouldn’t have breached it anyway.

Midwives, maternity support workers, other NHS workers and working people right across the public sector have endured years of prices rising faster than their pay. The effect of that has been a pay cut because what they earn buys less and less each year. It is time for all of us to tell the Government that it is high time for a pay rise for midwives, MSWs and other public sector workers.

Last month we produced a quick, three-page guide about how to help lobby Members of Parliament on this issue. Click here to get hold of a pdf of that guide. Use that for information about how to lobby your MP on pay.

But if you live in or near London (or could get to London), you may be able to help even more. If you are free in the early evening (6.30pm-8pm) of Tuesday 17 October please come along to the Britain still needs a pay rise rally in Parliament Square. It’s being organised by the TUC, of which the RCM is a member. Click here for more information about the event.

Join people from across the public sector who have seen their pay whittled away by inflation year after year.

Not everyone will be able to make it, of course. London is too far for many to travel, and many will of course be working. But if it is possible for you to come, please do so. And bring with you anyone who wants to support not just an end to the public sector pay cap but a fair pay rise too.
