RCM comments on Scottish Government National Health and Social Care Workforce Plan

Binary Data

The Scottish Government has published its National Health and Social Care Workforce Plan. Commenting on the plan, Mary Ross-Davie, Director for Scotland at the Royal College of Midwives, said: “This is a welcome announcement that clearly recognises warnings from the RCM about our ageing midwifery workforce and the need to ensure those that will retire are replaced.*

“We still need to see the specific figure for midwives but are hopeful that this will go some way to ensuring we have enough midwives to care for Scotland’s mothers, babies and their families.

“Whilst the report does say that Scotland is meeting the recommended ratios for midwives, it must be recognised that these are minimum ratios and we would expect our maternity services to be aiming for more than the minimum to ensure safe, high quality maternity care.

“Scotland’s birthrate has flattened recently, but births are becoming increasingly complex with women often needing more time and support from midwives. This is why it is critical that we use this time to increase our midwifery workforce to meet the rising demands on maternity services.

“Retention of the midwives we already have is crucial so it is also encouraging that this is being actively looked at and steps taken. The focus on recruitment to rural locations is also welcome and these often struggle to attract staff.

“We look forward to working with the Scottish Government to ensure our NHS and our maternity services can deliver the safest, highest quality care.”
