RCM Summary: The INFANT Trial findings

Findings of the INFANT Trial were published last month which showed that ‘…use of computerised interpretation of cardiotocographs in women who have continuous electronic fetal monitoring in labour does not improve clinical outcomes for mothers or babies.’

RCM is concerned that inaccurate claims are being  circulated by K2 Medical systems which say that the INFANT Guardian® technology “ has been found in the largest maternity trial ever funded by the NHS, to help reduce stillbirths by a factor of four and reduce the number of babies born brain damaged by half compared to UK obstetric units who do not have K2 technology”.  These are unhelpful and may be misleading to our members.  We have therefore summarised the INFANT Trial findings and will publish expert midwifery analysis in the near future to further support midwives and women’s  understanding of the evidence-base about this issue.
