RCM shows support at Pride celebrations

Along with hundreds of other organisations, RCM staff members took part in the annual Pride parade in London on Saturday (7 July).

More than 500 LGBT+ parade groups marched through a very hot central London – from Portland Place to Whitehall – to celebrate diversity and the LGBT+ community.

RCM staff who took part in the parade included employment relations advisor Alice Sorby, head of organising and engagement Denise Linay and director for services to members Suzanne Tyler.

Commenting on the event, Alice said: ‘Midwives marched alongside other trade unions at London Pride on Saturday braving the heat to proudly represent the RCM, and we were cheered by the crowds as we walked by wearing our RCM Pride t-shirts and waving our flags. It was a fantastic atmosphere and we are looking forward to next year already.’

This year’s theme was ‘Pride Matters’ and centres on the findings of a report that Pride in London organisers have compiled following their Matter of pride survey 2018.

The report reveals that one in three LGBT+ people have been verbally abused because of their identity, sexuality or gender. While more than three quarters of LGBT+ people also said that they don’t feel comfortable showing affection to a partner in public.

The organisers said: 'While we’ve come a long way in our fight for equal rights, there’s still a way to go for actual equality.'
