RCM FGM campaign wins TUC award

The FGM animations created by the RCM have won a TUC Communication Award 2018 for best digital membership communication.

The judges said that the entries that showcased positive stories of union successes and influence were deemed the most interesting and eye-catching, but the moving animation on FGM from the RCM was their favourite.

They said: ‘These powerful animations are deeply moving. A great effort by a union to positively affect the society around them by mobilising their members. Survivors’ voices are at the centre of this impressive resource.’

The series of short animated films on FGM were developed by the RCM in collaboration with the RCOG, the RCGP, survivors of FGM, NGOs and a variety of local community partners.

The RCM and its partners worked closely with FGM survivors to ensure the authenticity of the stories being told via the animations remained true to the realities of surviving FGM.

RCM professional policy advisor Janet Fyle collected the award along with FGM campaigner, psychotherapist and founder of the Dahlia project Leyla Hussein.

The RCM’s MSW month campaign was entered for the best recruitment/new member communication award, while the RCM’s Fair pay overdue campaign was entered for the best designed communication award.

Midwives magazine was also entered for the best membership communication award for print journal, which it had won previously in 2016.
