Iolanthe awards to open

Applications for the Iolanthe awards 2017 are due to open on Monday (14 November).

The Iolanthe Midwifery Research Fellowship and the Iolanthe Midwives Awards are open to midwives and the Iolanthe Student Awards are for midwifery students.

While the Jean Davies Award is open to midwives and midwifery students who are RCM members.

The awards are run by the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust, which formed to improve the care of mothers, babies and families through awarding grants and fellowships in support of midwifery education, practice and research.

Over the last 25 years, the trust has awarded in excess of 200 bursaries to midwives and others concerned with maternity care.

There were more than 100 entries for the 2016 awards – the highest number the trust has ever received.

Sheena Byrom OBE, chair of the trustees at the Iolanthe Midwifery Trust, said: ‘We read more applications than ever before and debated vigorously over the choice of award winners from so many excellent and deserving projects.

‘The topics reflected concerns like maternal mental health, women affected by poor diet and nutrition, decisions on birth setting and strategies to reduce intervention in birth.

‘We were delighted to be able to help these students and midwives from all countries of the UK.’

Applications for next year will open on Monday and close on Friday 27 January 2017.
