‘Scrap the pay cap, Theresa May’

The RCM and other NHS trade unions have written to Theresa May calling on her to end her policy of public sector pay restraint.

The letter states that many say the 1% pay freeze is partly to blame for the Conservatives failing to secure a parliamentary majority.

The letter goes on to say that the signatories are ‘very worried that care is becoming unsafe’, despite staff delivering to the best of their abilities.

It calls for the Prime Minister to ‘prioritise patient safety by guaranteeing safe staffing across all of our services and changing your policy on NHS pay’.
Jon Skewes, RCM director for policy, employment relations and communications, signed the letter for the RCM.

He said: 'The general election result clearly showed that the public are concerned about on-going pay restraint in the NHS. We, along with the other unions, are demanding that the government put an end to their disastrous policy of pay restraint. 

‘Since 2010 the average midwife has seen their pay drop in value by over £6000. This is unacceptable, unsustainable and cannot continue.

‘The RCM, along with the other health unions will continue to pressure the Government on this issue and will be calling on our members to write to their MP asking for their support for fair pay.’
He added: ‘It is time for a just and fair pay award for our hardworking midwives and other NHS staff, and one that makes up for years of real terms pay cuts. Investing in NHS staff is an investment in better care.’

A total of 15 trade unions have signed the letter, including the British Medical Association, the Royal College of Nursing and British Dental Association, among others.

The Department of Health has released the following statement.

‘As the secretary of state has made clear, the support and welfare of NHS staff is a top priority as they do a fantastic job. The government is committed to ensuring they can continue to deliver world-class patient care.’
