‘Midwives committed to improving safety say RCM on new report’

Binary Data

Today (Friday 17th February) NHS England have published the findings of the Local Supervising Authority (LSA) Independent National Audit of Supervisory Investigations in England.

The audit was undertaken across four regions of NHS England from April – September 2016 and included the audit of midwifery supervisory investigations from the 1 January 2014 and 31 December 2015.

Commenting, Cathy Warwick Chief Executive of the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) says; “The RCM is committed to improving safety. This includes conducting a thorough investigation where there is a poor outcome of care. Such investigations must happen in a timely fashion, involve the parents from the moment that failings of care have occurred and ensure learning. The RCM therefore welcomes this report.

“Although the system of statutory supervision will cease to exist from April this year, other investigatory processes will continue. This audit shows how important it is, not just to develop standards around investigatory processes which follow best practice, but to ensure everyone involved receives training and support in how to follow such standards. It is also important to have systems in place to ensure compliance.

“The RCM is also currently assisting NPEU in developing a national perinatal mortality review tool to systematise the process and to ensure parents are involved throughout the process.

Standardised investigatory processes are critical if we are to provide the highest quality of maternity care to women and their families and to support a learning culture in our maternity services.”
