RCM responds to first ever guilty verdict for FGM in UK

Today the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) has responded to the first ever guilty verdict for FGM in UK.

Commenting Janet Fyle, Professional Policy Advisor at the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) says; “Today is a momentous day for the campaign to end FGM and this is the first of many prosecutions to come because FGM continues to take place in the UK.

“Todays verdict is very significant. It also justifies the RCM and its partners' relentless campaign to end FGM and to protect women and girls from this human rights abuse, despite the many challenges and push back from some groups.

"We have spent many years lobbying the government to ensure that ending FGM and the safeguarding of girls remains a high priority on the agenda, so today is a triumph of sorts.

“The crime of FGM is happening on our doorsteps, amongst our communities, to women and girls. Therefore anybody with any knowledge of this practice taking place should come forward to the relevant authorities and report it immediately.

“Also, any midwife or healthcare professional with FGM safeguarding concerns must remember mandatory reporting of FGM is their duty. It’s imperative that we all remain vigilant, and ask members of the various communities to support professionals by also alerting them to FGM which is child abuse.”
