Legal services

RCM members have access to free, comprehensive legal cover from Thompsons Solicitors.

The legal service is completely free of charge, guarantees you specialist advice and ensures that you’ll always keep 100% of your compensation – something you won’t get from high-street lawyers or your insurers. Whatever the issue, however complex the claim, Thompsons fights hard for RCM members. Your legal protection extends beyond your working hours and to your family too.

The package includes:

  • Personal injury advice – at work, home, abroad or on the roads
  • Employment law and NMC case advice (access this via your RCM representative)
  • Personal injury protection for family members for non-workplace accidents
  • Reduced rates for probate, wills and conveyancing for you and your family.

To access legal protection that works as hard as you do, contact the RCM Legal Service today on: 0808 100 7776 or visit: https://www.thompsonstradeunion.law/trade-unions/rcm.

Some RCM benefits are only available in the mainland UK (including Northern Ireland) legal jurisdictions. This is due to the existing legal arrangements that apply in Isle of Man and the Channel Islands.

Employment tribunal fee

From July the government is making it more expensive to lodge a case at an employment tribunal. The total fee to be paid in each case will be over £1000. This is clearly designed to discourage employees taking cases against employers. However members of the RCM will not have to pay these fees because we will provide interest free loans to RCM members to cover any and all fees in employment cases where we are representing. The fee will be reclaimed from the employer in the event of a successful outcome. Where the claim is settled on a lump sum basis, or otherwise concluded without full payment of fees, (subject to any waiver by the RCM) ,the sum incurred in fees will be the first call on the amount recovered and the balance will be the member's compensation. No repayment shall be due from the member if the claim is lost or discontinued.
