Kellogg’s All-Bran® is honoured to be an Alliance Partner of the Royal College of Midwives. The partnership between the RCM and the Kellogg Company helps to highlight the challenge of an almost global deficiency of fibre intake during pregnancy, and the subsequent consequences of constipation and poor digestive health.

Poor digestive health is commonplace as a consequence of the hormonal changes during pregnancy. Around 40% of pregnant women experience constipation, and between 25%-35% are affected by haemorrhoids. Increasing intake of wheat bran fibre is one of the simplest and most effective natural ways to help to both prevent and relieve constipation.* In fact, this is the first line of action recommended by NICE for uncomplicated pregnancies.** 

Through the partnership, we support education and resources to help benefit both RCM members and mothers to be, and communicate key messages about wheat bran fibre benefits during pregnancy and beyond.

New systematic review on the impact of cereal fibres on the gut microbiota

Fibre is recognised as a nutrient associated with regularity, but emerging science also demonstrates the importance of fibre in supporting the gut microbiota. New Fibre Factsheet

Emerging science shows the role of fibre as a prebiotic i.e. supporting the growth of good bacteria in the gut, in addition to the more widely positive effects on stool bulking and intestinal transit time. Prebiotics differ from probiotics. Probiotics are living bacteria in certain foods which, when consumed, pass through the digestive system into the gut. Prebiotics within fibre-rich foods 'feed' selective bacteria, which already exist in the gut, supporting the individual's health. 

As a result, diets high in fibre, particularly cereal fibres including wheat bran, are thought to increase certain beneficial gut bacteria. This can produce wide ranging health benefits including; support for the immune function, reducing cholesterol and maintaining a healthy bodyweight.

  • Information about fibre in pregnancy and at other life stages
  • Emerging science on prebiotic potential of cereal fibre 

CPD Module

At Kellogg’s we are committed to working with external experts to help support the digestive health of women during pregnancy. To this end, we have supported the British Nutrition Foundation (BNF) in developing an online course to help inform and educate midwives and maternity support workers around the benefits of fibre during pregnancy. This module is CPD accredited by the RCM and as our first partnership activity we are offering this to RCM members free of charge.

RCM Annual Conference

Kellogg’s All-Bran has actively supported the RCM Conference, including hosting a breakfast session by Angie Jefferson, registered dietitian and consultant nutritionist. The ‘Keeping Regular in Pregnancy’ presentation highlighted the common digestive health issues in pregnancy and outlined the current recommendations and NICE guidance in this area. Angie also delivered practical advice on how these recommendations can be integrated into practice.
