This is a very timely and well constructed CD. The modules are well ordered and the introduction clearly highlights the purpose and effective use of the resource. The website is at the end of the CD and I would suggest registering at the beginning so as to make best use of extra resources when progressing through the modules.
Foundations of any interaction with any family are highlighted, such as good communication, health and safety, preparedness and appropriate knowledge and skills. The required histories are considered and organising the field of work is clearly demonstrated. There is a good summary of findings on the PDF link.
The examination process is clear and systematic and each system can be visited separately as well as the complete examination at the end. The heart sounds are too soft to hear in spite of the volume on the CD and my laptop being at its highest. It would also be useful to be able to slow them down to listen for the extra sounds before speeding them up to normal rate for a neonate. The graphics are good, particularly for the examination of hips. The care plans were adequate, but when attempting to access the cases on the website, I couldn’t – I was hoping this would give an indication as to how to write up the whole examination.
When looking at the health promotional aspect of the examiner, the narrator refers to ‘cot death’ rather than sudden infant death syndrome and only considers the position of the baby rather than including lifestyle issues such as smoking, drinking and the dangers of sofas which is much greater than a bed. The later follow-ups with immunisations are useful, as questions are often asked about later care.
It is a very good CD-ROM that considers the holistic nature of the examination and undertakes the procedure in a systematic and unhurried manner. When combined with local theoretical and practical guidance, it gives the student time to revisit and reflect independently.
