Review by midwife and breastfeeding specialist Juliet Albert.

Discovering baby-led weaning
This is a very informal and parent-friendly DVD which features mothers and fathers chatting to camera about what did and did not work for them.

It is broken down into sections including: How does baby-led weaning work? Dealing with the mess, and What do other people think?

It’s actually very informative with many little gems to empower parents to let their babies play and explore food and feel the different textures. They explain that it can help hand-eye coordination and really encourages a family approach to eating, not only all together but also all eating the same food (but without the salt).

It hopefully would encourage parents to be less fearful of the mess that the baby makes when eating, by allowing them to feed themselves (as long as a parent is in the room supervising). Another important point they make is how useful it would be if more healthcare professionals understood and therefore recommended baby-led weaning.

Unfortunately they mention the choking and gagging concerns without giving more of an explanation which would have been really useful. Perhaps even having a healthcare professional explain how the gag reflex works and how baby does quickly get the hang of it or what should be done in an emergency.

And the best bit – not having to take food with you whenever you go out. Whether the claims that it truly results in a child that is less fussy about their food in later life – there isn’t the research to prove this – but I really liked this DVD and would highly recommend it to anyone interested in finding out more about baby-led weaning.

Have you seen this DVD? What did you think?
