Special cake for special occasion

Posted: 8 December 2011 by Rob Dabrowski

Fifty guests had their cake and ate it at the tenth anniversary of a midwifery led-unit.

Regional officer Lynne Galvin joined the guests at the birthday celebrations for Helme Chase midwifery-led unit.

Lynne presented a special RCM birthday cake and Tony Halsall, chief executive, arrived in time for its cutting.

He thanked all the staff for their hard work and said they have been ‘dedicated and passionate and do their utmost to provide an all-round excellent service’.

The unit, which is part of the University of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust, has been delivering midwifery-led care for 10 years.

It has welcomed more than 3000 newborns into the world and helps around 300 mothers a year to give birth, as well as supporting hundreds more pregnant women.

Guests on the day included midwives from past and present, clients, friends and family members.

The celebrations began with introductions from Jackie Holt, director of nursing, and Sascha Wells, head of midwifery.

Liane Powell, a Helme Chase midwife and organiser of the event, delivered a heartfelt speech about the pride she feels for the unit and all the staff.

A commemorative plaque was unveiled by Sarah Symmonds and her 10-year-old son Henry – the first baby born at the unit.

A raffle also was held to raise money for the unit and the Friends of Helme Chase charity was relaunched.
