Slimming World joins the RCM Alliance
Midwives magazine: Issue 1 :: 2012
Slimming World has joined the RCM Alliance. The weight management organisation, with more than 8000 UK groups meeting weekly, will be working in partnership with the RCM to raise awareness in supporting pregnant women and breastfeeding mothers in managing their weight.
The alliance enables the RCM to work with carefully selected companies to support midwifery and promote the interests of the RCM, midwives and mothers.
Slimming World joins existing partners JOHNSON’S Baby, Mothercare, Pampers and Vitabiotics Pregnacare.
Slimming World is the only national weight management organisation that supports pregnant and breastfeeding women and, with the consent and ongoing recommendation of their midwife or GP, actively works with women to address weight issues.
‘We don’t encourage weight loss or ‘dieting’ during pregnancy – instead we support women to adopt a balanced, healthy diet to prevent excess weight gain; we also help mothers to manage their weight healthily following the birth of their child, while breastfeeding,’ said Caryl Richards, Slimming World’s managing director.
‘Joining the RCM Alliance is a tremendous opportunity to ensure pregnant women get the right information and advice, during and after pregnancy, and that midwives continue to be supported in the outstanding work they do.’
RCM chief executive Cathy Warwick said: ‘Slimming World’s approach to weight management with pregnant women is sound, achieves positive results and helps to change the lives of many women. This partnership will mean that we can work together through Slimming World’s groups and, through the work of midwives, to improve the health of women and their babies.’
