New tool gives data on local smoking impact

Posted: 02 August 2011 by Louise Hunt

Information on the extent and impact of smoking in each area of England is now available through a pilot of the Local Tobacco Control Profiles tool.

Introduced in 2010, the tool is now in its second phase of development and includes new indicators on tobacco control. The work is being led by the LHO on behalf of the Public Health Observatories in England.

The latest version brings together a set of indicators using local authority and primary care trust data to give commissioners and services up to date information on tobacco control. The indicators cover: the health problems caused by smoking; the extent of local smoking, and how services across the NHS and local authorities are tackling smoking and its related problems.

The LHO is encouraging feedback on the test tool, including examples of how the information is being used locally, ahead of its main launch in September. A short survey is available on the website. For more information please visit www.tobaccoprofiles.info
