New student midwife database to enhance public safety

Posted: 22 July 2011 by Louise Hunt

The NMC is introducing a student index – a database, which from September 2011, will contain the data of every student who is enrolled on a pre-registration midwifery or nursing programme at an NMC approved education institution (AEI).

The aim of the index is to enhance public protection. It will primarily be used by AEIs to identify whether students who have enrolled on a programme at their institution had previously been dismissed from another programme for serious concerns or misconduct. AIEs will be able to carry out checks on such students to identify whether they would be suitable to re-commence a programme at their institution.

Before introducing the system, the NMC is holding a consultation to ensure all the implications of the system have been considered. It is particularly keen to hear from students and teachers.
