Midwives magazine: Issue 1 :: 2012

A state in northern Nigeria is set to employ 150 more midwives, it has been revealed.

Nigeria
The government of the Bauchi state has announced that the midwives, currently on the federal government's midwifery service scheme, are to be employed.

The two-year scheme was set up to provide healthcare services in rural areas and participants for the programme are drawn from across the country.

Dr Musa Muhammad Dambam, chairman of the state’s healthcare development, has announced the news.

He said governor Isa Yuguda has approved the employment of the midwives.

The state government has paid the allowances of the three batches of the midwifery workers deployed in Bauchi state for the year, he added.

The chairman also reiterated the government's commitment to sustaining staff training and retraining.

The Bauchi state is home to 55 tribes and about 5% of the population of Nigeria live there, with many working in agriculture.
