Leaflet for teens on the pelvic floor

Posted: 2 January 2012 by Rob Dabrowski

An award-winning leaflet, designed by teenagers and targeted at teenagers, is now available.

Your Pelvic Floor leaflet
Your Pelvic Floor discusses what a pelvic floor is, what it does and how and why it is important.

It features a selection of illustrations of pelvic floor exercises and also looks at issues surrounding childbirth, smoking and obesity.

The leaflet was designed by teenagers in conjunction with a number of NHS trusts and PromoCon Disabled Living NW.

It is supported by the Association for Continence Advice (ACA) and Patterson Medical NHS.

The leaflet’s practical and comprehensive style has been well received and it has scooped two Nursing Times awards.

Debbie Yarde, ACA chair, said: ‘We are extremely proud to be associated with Your Pelvic Floor.

‘The awards are testament to the time and effort that was placed into creating a flyer which appealed to teenagers and tackled the questions they are currently asking.

‘Teenagers can find discussing their pelvic floor embarrassing and consequently often suffer in silence.

‘Pelvic floor educational material to give to teenagers has been sorely lacking, however, with the creation of Your Pelvic Floor this void has been addressed.

‘It is wonderful to be able to educate young women on the benefits of a healthy pelvic floor and to be able to show those with pelvic floor issues that they have nothing to be embarrassed about and that they are not alone.’

The leaflet is billed as ideal for healthcare practitioners who work with teenagers.

Copies are available to purchase from the ACA Shop and prices start at £23.13 for 50 copies, with larger packs also available.

The leaflet can be viewed as an online booklet here and can be ordered from the ACA shop.
