Good news from our birth centres

Midwives magazine: Issue 7 :: 2011

By Jacque Gerrard, director of the RCM UK Board for England

Scarborough
Congratulations to Scarborough Birth Centre, which birthed its 500th woman. The midwives have worked hard to make the centre a success, so well done to all.

Penrith
I recently visited Penrith Birth Centre in Cumbria and was astounded at the additional work midwives were doing to promote and support midwife-led care. The centre lead set up an open week for families to promote the birth centre. Activities included a therapy afternoon about various holistic therapies, a baby afternoon where mothers met at the local children’s centre to hear about everything from buggy fitness to breast pumps, as well as an advice afternoon and a breastfeeding awareness picnic in Castle Park, which I attended.

Huddersfield
Thank you to the midwives at Huddersfield Family Birth Centre where I recently did some clinical update. It really brought home the importance of midwifery-led care. When I witnessed the autonomy, the promotion of active birth, physiological third stage and women in control of their births, it reminded me what empowering roles midwives have. The success of Huddersfield speaks for itself as about 700 women have birthed there each year.

Yorkshire and Humber
Congratulations to the organisers of the Yorkshire and Humber LSA annual winter conference held recently. Entitled ‘Improving care: back to basics’, it was themed around the CMACE 2011 report Saving mothers’ lives. It was an excellent example of shared learning among supervisors of midwives across the region.
