Fetal heart rate monitoring to launch

Midwives magazine: Issue 6 :: 2011

An innovative new training tool is to be rolled-out, following a successful pilot scheme.

The electronic fetal heart rate monitoring training resource (eFM) will be launched at an event on 13 September.

It is designed to improve interpretation and management of eFM in labour and has been developed by the RCM and RCOG in partnership with e-Learning for Healthcare.

It comes in response to litigation cases against the NHS involving fetal heart rate monitoring.

Chair of the eLfH and eFM committee, Barry Whitlow, said: ‘We are delighted to be launching the final version of eFM after a successful pilot of the project.

‘We hope this new innovative tool will assist healthcare professionals in their professional development and result in improved monitoring of the fetus.’

eFM will give individuals the ability to print out and copy files to their e-portfolios/CPD portfolios and show evidence of CTG training and competency.

It educates by using assessment-driven, case-based learning and provides performance feedback.

An initial pilot, which began in May this year, was hailed a success, with 90% of participants saying they thought the educational content was excellent.

In July the second phase of the pilot took place, in which 50 obstetricians and 50 midwives trialled the resource.

The free launch event will take place at the RCOG at 6-8pm and refreshments will be provided.

A range of influential speakers will be on-hand to talk about eMF and mark the occasion.

There will also be IT facilities available so that people can test out the resource and ask questions.

Places for the event must be prebooked by emailing rstoyle@rcog.org.uk with contact details and any guests attending with ‘EFM Launch’ in the subject line.
