St David’s Day conferencePreparations are underway for this year’s conference, which will be held on the day itself, 1 March. The theme of the conference is based on dignity and respect. Speakers include a representative from John Lewis Partnership who will talk about customer care and valuing staff, and Professor Stephen Rollnick who is well known for his work on motivational interviewing. Stephen will share his experiences about how men view maternity services and how, as a recent user of the service, he was treated. If you attended the conference last year, you will remember Susie Moore from Swansea University who moved many to tears. Susie is returning this year to run a short interactive workshop on challenging assumptions. We will also have the views of women who have used the service and of those who work within it. We are delighted that we have been asked to support the launch of the perinatal mental health training package and there will be an opportunity to see this in action.

Bilingualism and the midwifeWe all know how important the role of the midwife is in supporting women in making good life choices. And now we know that midwives can also play a key role in supporting the Welsh language. Twf, an organisation that offers advice on the advantages of using Welsh in the home and raising children bilingually, highlights the fact that there are a number of opportunities when midwives can talk to parents about whether or not they are going to raise their baby in a bilingual household. Twf now has resources available to support this and says that there is growing evidence of the advantages of speaking more than one language.
