The moving stories from Jennifer Worth’s best-selling trilogy have been adapted for television and will be shown on the BBC.
Detailing her time as a midwife in London’s east end in the 1950s, Worth’s stories have been turned into a six part drama to be screened on Sunday nights on BBC1 in January.
At a private screening last Wednesday (November 23), tributes were paid by the executive producers to Worth, who passed away aged 75 from cancer in May, shortly before filming was due to start.
The series features well-known names from TV, such as Jenny Agutter, Pam Ferris, Miranda Hart and Judy Parfitt and the lead role of Jenny Lee is played by newcomer Jessica Raine.
Ben Stephenson, controller of BBC drama commissioning, said: ‘This superb cast of some of our best established and new actresses will bring to life the extraordinary true stories and friendships of midwifery and family in 1950s East End London.
‘I would like to take this opportunity to thank the late Jennifer Worth for both her support and insight on Call The Midwife which I hope will serve as a fantastic tribute to both her life and work.’
