Midwives magazine: Issue 7 :: 2011
The world’s seven billionth baby was born in the Philippines earlier today.
Delivered just before midnight and weighing 5.5lb (2.5kg), Danica May Camacho was one of several newborns chosen from around the world by the United Nations (UN) to symbolically represent the global population milestone.
UN officials met Danica and her parents at Manila’s Jose Fabella Memorial Hospital, on the day marked ‘Seven Billion Day’, which aims to highlight the challenges of the world’s growing population.
They presented the family with a cake while other well-wishers handed over a scholarship grant for Danica’s education and some money to help her parents open a shop.
The current population of the Philippines, according to a UN report, is around 94.9 million people.
