Numerous
complaints to the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have been made
in the wake of the recent decision to air the first UK abortion services
advert on Channel 4.
The ASA cleared the advert, which is part of the Are you late? campaign from the sexual and reproductive healthcare service Marie Stopes.
Since
the ad aired in May it has caused offense to many anti-abortion groups,
with the ProLife Alliance responding in ‘outrage’ at the decision.
Marie Stopes however said that it will ‘empower women to reach
confident, informed decisions about their sexual health’.
Those
offended said the advertisers promoted abortion, offended religious
beliefs, trivialised the subject, and is sexist in portraying pregnancy
as a woman's responsibility with some claiming that it could even
encourage promiscuity among young people.
In
your opinion, do you think the ASA were right to air this? Do you think
it will promote abortion or will it offer a choice for women?
