In the last year the RCM has -

  • Campaigned to protect maternity services from cuts,for more midwives, recognition of the value of midwifery and to preserve your pay, terms and conditions and pensions.
  • Lobbied health ministers and politicians in all four UK countries, and recruited a new panel of MPS to speak up for us in Westminster as we challenge the NHS reforms. We responded to over 120 consultations on policy, service reconfiguration and the most vital issues facing maternity services.
  • Publicised the midwives shortage and maternity services issues through the media in over 3000 articles in international, national, regional and local newspapers and appearances on TV and radio.  
  • Transformed your access to CPD  with RCM    i-learn and now RCM i-folio.     
Renewals 2012
  • Represented and provided legal assistance for individual members including NMC referral cases and won over £600,000 for members in personal injury cases.

  • Increased our capacity to support you at work by recruiting and training more workplace reps.

  • Championed training opportunities and appropriate deployment guidance for maternity support workers, delivering an apprenticeship guide and guidelines on training and development.
  • Launched RCM Communities – the social media site for our members for vibrant dialogue and information sharing UK wide.
  • Published definitive evidence on the socio-economic value of midwives, our audit of midwifery practice and new resources for birth centres.
  • Promoted and celebrated midwifery innovation and achievement through the RCM Awards,
    conferences, seminars and events and advanced global midwifery through international participation.
  • Reopened the RCM Library collection together with enhanced library information services for members.
  • Welcomed over 1,000 new members and reached our largest ever membership.
