Support for You

Medical Malpractice Insurance

Student Membership includes the Medical Malpractice Insurance you need to carry out midwifery duties during your clinical placements, secure in the knowledge that RCM student membership insures you against legal liability for damages caused by accident or malpractice. If you are appropriately qualified, this insurance will extend to your employment as a registered nurse in the NHS while you are still a student midwife.

The RCM is the trade union for midwives.  Student Midwife members have access to our representatives and officers who are all qualified midwives, trained to represent and support you in clinical and workplace related matters.  You will be supported through your National Union of Students (NUS) membership for matters regarding your university course, however, The RCM has a formal agreement with the NUS to look after your interests on clinical placements.

We provide employment-related legal advice and representation when you need it through our Legal Assistance scheme, including personal injury cases.  If you should be referred to the Nursing and Midwifery Council, we provide full representation, including barrister advocacy at hearings if required.

Your Voice, your community

We are the voice of midwifery, campaigning for the resources, quality, safety and choice women need in maternity services now and in the future.  We speak up for decent student bursaries, jobs when you qualify and fulfilling midwifery careers.

Student Membership connects you with midwifery students across the UK and opens the midwifery profession network to you.

  • Connect, discuss, share ideas, views and mutual support with midwifery students across the UK through our member-only student group at RCM Communities, our online social media facility.

  • Direct contact through membership of your local RCM branch with working midwives, who can provide advice and support as well as tell you about the pitfalls and pleasures to come!

  • Opportunity to become involved in the RCM Student Midwives Working Group to help keep the RCM in touch with the views of students and plan student activities.

Saving you money

  • Free Legal advice for your and your family from Thompson’s Solicitors for non-employment-related matters.

  • Discounts on Financial Services, including car, home and holiday insurance, life insurance and critical illness or income protection from LV= .
