Benefits of membership

The RCM is your professional association and trade union. We promote evidence-based innovation, continuing professional development and excellence in practice.  Being a student midwife Member supports your preparation and helps you learn about professional life ahead.

  • Free subscription to RCM Midwives Magazine mailed to you six times a year – your insight into midwifery today including plenty of student-relevant information  including the popular “How to Guides” Midwives' section.

  • Ezines with the latest midwifery news and RCM activities and Student Lifeezine four times a year.

  • Dedicated Annual Student Midwives' Conference - with discount for RCM student members.

  • Access to member-only information online including the RCM’s policy and discussion papers, identifying midwifery best practice and developments for the profession.

  • Direct contact through membership of your local RCM branch with working midwives, who can provide advice and support as well as tell you about the pitfalls and pleasures to come!

Student Midwife Membership includes the Medical Malpractice Insurance you need to carry out midwifery duties during your clinical placements, secure in the knowledge that RCM student midwife membership insures you against legal liability for damages caused by accident or malpractice. If you are appropriately qualified, this insurance will extend to your employment as a registered nurse in the NHS while you are still a student midwife.

Last but by no means least, student members have access to our trade union representatives and officers who are all qualified midwives, trained to represent and support you in clinical and workplace related matters. You will be supported through your National Union of Students (NUS) membership for matters regarding your university course, however, the RCM has a formal agreement with the NUS to look after your interests on clinical placements.
