Membership categories

There are different categories of RCM membership to suit different working circumstances.  See the details below as stated in the RCM Rules for the membership category for which you are eligible, their benefits and the subscription rate which applies. 

 

 

- Full membership  

Annual subscription for 2010 is £230.16 

Full membership of the RCM is open to any qualified midwife who has at some time registered a midwifery qualification with the Nursing and Midwifery Council and as a result is on the appropriate part or parts of the register for their sphere of practice. (This means that a non practicing midwife with an active registration on Parts 1 and/or 3 of the NMC register can be a full member of the RCM whilst practicing as a nurse or health visitor).

- Full member (Joint Agreement)  

Annual subscription for 2010 is £177.72

A full member (joint agreement) is a midwife lecturer who is also a member of another professional body or trade union representing midwife lecturers (with which the RCM has an arrangement for joint membership which has been approved by the General Secretary).

- Special category associate member of the RCM 

Annual subscription for 2010 is £133.32

A special category associate member is a midwife who is currently a full member of the RCN.*

Representation for Nursing and Midwifery Council proceedings (relating to incidents if a full member prior to entering this category)

Entitled to vote at general meetings and to vote in elections for office as a member of the Council (up until the first anniversary of becoming a special category associate member if in full membership prior to enter this category).

Entitled to attend at branch meetings

Entitled to vote at branch meetings (up until the first anniversary of becoming a Special Category associate member if in full membership prior to enter this category).

 

* A full member of the RCM may also apply to become an associate member of the RCN.

 

- Associate member   

Annual subscription for 2010 is £133.32

An associate member is a member who is no longer in professional practice as a midwife or nurse in the UK and must previously been a full and/or student member of the RCM for at least 5 years before transferring to this category.

A midwife maybecome an associate member whether living in the United Kingdom or overseas.

Medical malpractice insurance (relating to incidents whilst previously a full member for up to 10 years from ceasing practice).

Entitled to attend at branch meetings

Entitled to vote at branch meetings (for 1 year after entering this category)

 

- Retired member 

Annual subscription for 2010 is £28.00

A retired member is one who has been a full member for at least 15 years and who hasceased to be actively employed by virtue of retirement at statutory pensionable age or due to early retirement recognised by employers and who is not engaged in paid employment of any kind.


 Benefits comprise

Medical malpractice insurance  (a retired member will be covered by medical malpractice insurance for a total of 10 years after ceasing practice provided she was a full member, an associate member or a retired member at the time the claim was notified)

Representation for Nursing and Midwifery Council proceedings (relating to incidents whilst previously a Full member)

- Honorary member 

An honorary member is a member who was admitted as such before 10 May 2005.

An honorary member is exempt from paying subscriptions.

Medical Malpractice Insurance  (An honorary member will be covered by medical malpractice insurance for a total of 10 years after ceasing practice provided she was a full member, an associate member or a retired member at the time the claim was notified)

- Student midwife member   

Subscription for 2010 is £1.67 per month

A student midwife member is one undertaking a programme of education and training in the UK to become a midwife as prescribed by the Nursing and Midwifery Council.

Following qualification a student member is entitled to receive a further 3 months membership at the reduced student rate before transferring to full membership.

Entitlement to attend and vote at Branch Meetings

 

- International member   

Annual subscription for 2010 is £57.00

 

An international member is a midwife outside the UK whose registration has lapsed or who has never been registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council but has a recognised midwifery qualification and is registered with a relevant responsible or statutory body (recognised as such by the General Secretary of the RCM) in their country of employment or residence.

- Affiliate (Non midwife) 

Annual subscription for 2010 is £57.00

An affiliate is not, and has never been, registered or qualified as a midwife but has an interest / involvement in the care of childbearing women and the newborn. Such persons may be in the UK or overseas.

- Maternity Support Worker Membership

Annual subscription for 2010 is £107.88

A maternity support worker member is a person who is employed to support the work of the midwife in the care of childbearing women, the newborn and their family.

Maternity Leave

If you notify the College in writing at least one month in advance of beginning maternity leave, you can receive up to 52 weeks' free membership. One month before returning to work you will then be required to contact us again in writing so that we can readjust your membership category. You do not have medical malpractice and personal accident cover or voting rights over this period, neither is employment advice or representation available for any incident that occurs while on subscription suspension.

 

Communications

All RCM members receive a free subscription to the bi-monthly RCM Midwives Magazine. All members have access to the quarterly Evidence Based Midwifery online. A hard copy version is available for an additional annual cost of £24: to order this, please telephone 020 8950 9117 or click here

 

Data Protection

The information which you provide will be securely held by the Royal College of Midwives (RCM) in our contact database.  It will be treated securely and with sensitivity in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.  The information will be used by the RCM for the purposes of providing you with information about  its  full range of membership services.  We may also communicate with you by post, email or telephone in connection with these membership services.  Data may be shared with our contractors including our affinity benefit partners.  Data will not be disclosed to any external commercial organisation or third party not contracted to the RCM without your individual permission. Under the terms of the Data Protection Act 1998 you can choose at any time not to receive communications from us  or our partners in future.
