Personal accident cover

RCM Membership includes personal accident insurance cover as a benefit of membership.  This is in addition to free legal advice and representation on any personal injury provided by Thompsons Solicitors. 

 

Who is  covered?
Any Member of The Royal College of Midwives who is aged 70 years or under.
What am I covered for?
This policy provides cover for accidental bodily injury or assault resulting in disability or death.

 

When am I covered?
While at work and while in the course of daily travel directly between the residence (normal or temporary) and place of work.
Samaritan acts arising from the covered person's occupation as a qualified midwife.

 

What are the Benefits?
For Temporary Total Disablement from usual occupation the benefit of £60 is payable per week for a maximum of 52 weeks in all not necessarily consecutive.  This benefit is not payable for the first 26 weeks of any Period of Disablement with the exception of private practice midwives for whom this is not payable for the first 7 days of any Period of Disablement
A lump sum benefit of £10,000 is payable in respect of:
  • Death
  • Loss of two or more Limbs or both eyes or one of each
  • Loss of one eye
  • Permanent and total loss of speech
  • Permanent and total loss of hearing in both ears
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of one Limb
  • Permanent Total Disablement from gainful employment of any and every kind
A lump sum benefit of £2,500 is payable in respect of:
  • Loss of one Kidney
  • Loss of one Lung
  • Loss of Facial Tissue which necessitates the use of a surgical Mask
There are also lump sum benefits for:
  • Permanent and total loss of hearing in one ear - £2,500
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of one big toe - £1,500
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of any other toe - £500
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of one thumb - £3,000
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of one forefinger - £ 2,000
  • Loss by permanent physical severance or permanent and total loss of use of any other finger - £1,000
  • Permanent total loss of use of shoulder or elbow - £2,500
  • Permanent total loss of use of wrist, hip, knee or ankle - £2,000
  • Removal by surgical operation of lower jaw - £3,000
When are the payments made?
Benefit entitlement in cases of permanent disability are subject to a medical decision, and payments will be made within two years of the date of the injury.
Temporary Total Disablement benefits are payable from week 27, with the exception of private practice midwives for whom benefits are payable from day 8 of any Period of Disablement

 

What am I NOT covered for?
  • Bodily injury following an accident consequent upon, or contributed to by the covered person having a physical or mental defect or infirmity which was known at the time of the injury or policy inception.
  • Any accident that occurs outside the covered person's occupation in the business, or during travel that is not reasonably connected with the occupation.
  • Any sickness, stress related illness, disease, suicide or self-harm.
  • Benefits were you are still able to work.  You must be unable to work at any occupation.  This is not restricted to midwifery. 
  • In the case of Permanent Total Disablement you must be unable to work at any occupation at any time in the future.
  • Accident incident event or circumstance which may give rise to a claim which are not notified within 90 days.
How do I claim?
To make a claim or if you have any enquiries about this cover, contact Thompsons Solicitors on freephone 0808 100 7776, quoting your RCM membership number. 
A member should call Thompsons Solicitors where they will be asked a series of questions about their personal injury. The necessary forms for Thompsons will be posted out, and including in this will be a ‘Willis’ insurance form that needs to be completed, if required, to Willis Insurers.
 
If you are unfortunate enough to be involved in an accident, you must notify as soon as possible. Although no weekly benefit is payable until the seventh month of disablement, it is important to lodge the claim within 13 weeks of the accident.
