Tax relief

Do you know that you can claim tax relief on your RCM subscription?

Subscriptions paid to the Royal College of Midwives and annual subscriptions to journals are allowable as a fee or subscription to a professional body or learned society (under section 201 of the Income and Corporation Taxes Act 1988), and qualify for tax relief at the standard rate.

You can claim for your periodic registration fees to the NMC. You also have an extra allowance for shoes and tights at the same time.

It is possible to backdate your tax claim for up to six years.

Do you currently pay for the costs of cleaning your uniform?

You can also claim tax relief on the costs of laundering your own uniform, providing your employer does not launder your uniform or provide free cleaning facilities for you to use. You will also not be able to claim if you do not wear a uniform.

An article by Melanie Every, "Tax relief for costs of cleaning uniforms", was published in the RCM Midwives Journal December 1998, 1(12): 370

For an itemised statement of your payments, and forms to help you to deal with your tax office, please contact the RCM Membership Department: Tel: 020 7312 3500 or E-mail: membership@rcm.org.uk

If you have any further queries contact your tax office. Your employer will give you the address.
