 Socioeconomic Value of the Midwife

Work to date by the RCM indicates that investing in midwives and midwife-led care is central to delivering high quality maternity care. The purpose of this study is to provide a robust assessment of evidence for the clinical and socioeconomic effectiveness of midwife-led models of care. This will provide evidence of the quality and safety of midwife-led models of care and inform maternity care policy.

 

This report presents methods and findings of an overall literature based review of midwife-led care. The report is divided into three discrete sections each addressing a specific component of the evaluation, namely:

Socioeconomic Value of the Midwife
  • Ssction 1 - presents a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomised trials of midwife-led models of care compared with other models of care for childbearing women. This review builds from and extends the current Cochrane review on midwife-led models of care.

  • Section 2 - presents a meta-synthesis of qualitative research on midwife-led care.

  • Section 3 - presents an assessment of the cost effectiveness of midwife-led care in the United Kingdom.
