Vanessa Shand has been a midwife for 24 years and has worked in all areas of midwifery. She trained and worked as a midwife in Lewisham, London followed by Trowbridge GP unit, Wiltshire and then South Shields, Tyne and Wear.
Since 1991 Vanessa has worked in NHS Tayside, Scotland, in the Labour Suite, and on community, then 10 years as a postnatal ward manager. Most recently she has been the Lead for the Maternity Collaborative taking forward patient safety in maternity services and is now taking forward the vulnerability agenda across NHS Tayside.
Vanessa has been a local work place representative for the past 16 years and is heavily involved in partnership holding a number of positions including Staff Chairman and 6 years as Vice-Chair of the Area Partnership Forum. She is a member of the UK Board for Scotland and is their current Vice-Chair.
Most notably Vanessa had a period on secondment to the RCM as a national officer and in 2008 was appointed as an NMC Local Supervising Authority Reviewer.
She feels strongly that postnatal care is the forgotten service and it needs to be promoted and utilised to the benefit of women and their babies.
