Having done her general training in her home town of Darlington in the north-east, Marie moved to the Olive Haydon School of Midwifery based at both Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospitals in London. After qualifying Marie worked as a midwife at Guy’s and undertook the Advanced Diploma in Midwifery at the RCM in 1990. From 1993-94 Marie was senior midwife for the labour ward at Wycombe General Hospital in Buckinghamshire. A very different experience to deprived inner London but by 1994 Marie was back in South-East London as Head of Midwifery (HoM) at Lewisham Hospital for six years. An MBA, two children and a short break later, Lesley Page and Marie became Joint HoM at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Trust (GSTT) then moving into the Clinical Director role in 2005, initially with a Consultant for two years.
Marie's NMC work has been four years with Fitness to Practice and then a member for England of the Midwifery Committee since 2009. She has participated in national and local work to enhance midwifery services. As Clinical Director of Women’s Services Marie has gained a lot of insight into the wider aspects of maternity services and love that she is still able to work clinically. Marie now shares the CD role again which enables her to devote energy to new ventures like the RCM Board. After 26 years as a practising midwife Marie feels that she has a contribution to make.
